Sound Bowls
What are Singing Bowls?
Singing Bowls, also known as Tibetan singing bowls, Himalayan bowls, or sound bowls, have a long-standing history in spiritual and healing practices. Singing bowls are spiritual instruments that produce rich layers of sound that facilitate deep meditation, relaxation, and healing. They bring ethereal complexity, overtones, spontaneity, and uniqueness to sound treatments and sound bathing.
Singing Bowls are Planetary
Traditionally, the Singing Bowls were made of seven metals, each metal corresponding to an inner planet: Gold for the Sun, Silver for the Moon, Mercury for planet Mercury, Copper for planet Venus, Iron for planet Mars, Tin for planet Jupiter, and Lead for planet Saturn. Each metal produces an individual sound, special harmonics, and together the metals produce the dimensional singing sound of the bowl.
History of Singing Bowl Sound Therapy
The use of Singing Bowls for sound therapy and ritual dates back to early Shamanistic religions of Nepal and China. There are round metal bowls in photographs of temple interiors that look exactly like singing bowls. They were used as offertory dishes or chalices, and as tools in rituals and meditation.
Accounts of traveling metalsmiths also date back to this tradition. They were believed to have been commissioned by monks to make the bowls with specific harmonics. Some metalsmiths were said to have been commissioned by spirit and actually dreamed the sound of the bowl before creating its physical form and Soundscape.
Singing Bowl Manufacturing
For more than fifty years, no new bowls were created and many believed that the craft of bowl making had been lost, with most of the bowls in the marketplace ranging in age from 50 to 200 years. However, in the last decade largely spurred by the Free Tibet movement the craft of making these bowls has been reclaimed, and new bowls are being produced.
Each Singing Bowl is Uniquely Shaped
Each bowl is hand-pounded into a unique shape. Some bowls contain inscriptions, patterns, and decorative markings, which are punched into the metal after the bowl is hammered into its shape. No two bowls sound completely alike, or harmonize with other bowls in the same way.
Acutonics Boutique Bowl Selection
Not all Singing Bowls are high quality, in fact many are not. Acutonics considers the following factors to create a boutique bowl selection available for purchase:
- Sound Quality: Acutonics bowls produce a clear, sustained tone. High-quality bowls produce rich, layered sounds with multiple overtones.
- Material and Craftsmanship: Authentic singing bowls are typically hand-made with intention, and a vibrant blend of metals that contribute to the bowl's unique sound.
- Size and Weight: Larger bowls generally produce deeper, more resonant sounds, while smaller bowls create higher-pitched tones. Acutonics pairs specific bowls together for purchase to maximize harmonic symbiosis and reduce unpleasant dissonance.
