Planetary Gongs
What Is A Gong?
A gong is a traditional musical instrument consisting of a flat, circular metal disc, which produces a resonant, deep sound when played. Although similar to the concept of a singing bowl, Gongs are often stationary and produce much deeper and more resonant tones than bowls. They come in different sizes and types, each producing unique and deep, profound tones and vibrations.
Gongs are not only musical instruments but also symbols of power, spirituality, and communal harmony in many cultures. As a sound tool for healing, Gongs are used to penetrate deep and produce expansive harmonic sound treatments known as sound baths. While Acutonics tuning forks are designed to create micro-vibrations that are applied directly to channels within the body, the gongs are designed to effect transformation in large environments.
What Are Planetary Gongs?
Each Gong is handcrafted with the utmost care to elaborate specifications. The Planetary Gong Series is made to evoke the healing energies of the planetary bodies in our solar system using the musical frequencies calculated originally by Hans Cousto and commonly referred to as the “music of the spheres”. Each of these gongs has unique tonal qualities based on the orbital pattern of the celestial body it is attuned to.
Sound Healing With Gongs
Gongs set a powerful stage for the therapeutic setting by dramatically shifting the molecular environment, setting up layers of vibrations in the air that resound through our emotional, psychological, physical, and spiritual bodies.
Gongs may be sounded individually or in community washing the body in a series of waves that reach the very depths of consciousness. As human beings who are comprised mainly of liquid, these vibrations move through all of our tissues and organs, releasing blockages, restoring homeostasis and creating a profound sense of peace and relaxation. As a sacred healing tool, gongs offer us a gift that is unlike any other.
How Are Gongs Used In Acutonics?
The Planetary Gongs are integrated into the Acutonics System of Healing & Education and used by both individuals and practitioners to uncover feelings, stimulate growth, balance, inner harmony, and evolution of the nervous system. Used on their own or as part of a Harmonic Attunement® gongs are integrated into individual sessions as well as attunements for families, groups, communities, and organization.
Additional Available Gong Types
We also offer Paiste Symphonic Gongs and Sound Creation Gongs. The Symphonic Gongs have a slightly raised surface with a harmonic and universal sound structure. A good starting point for a gong collection, the Symphonic Gongs contain balanced proportions of various gong characteristics, which can be brought forth using different mallets and striking points. Symphonic Gongs feature some of the largest instruments, like the 60” and the extraordinary 80”, the world's largest gong. The Sound Creation gongs are crafted to emit vibrations that ground and stimulate various chakral centers in the body, and are an excellent healing tool.
How To Choose The Right Gong
Although many are drawn by intuition in choosing a Gong, here are some key factors you may also consider when selecting.
- Intended Purpose: Are you using your Gong for meditation and sound healing? Or for ceremonial or performance use? This may affect your choice in the style and size of your Gong.
- Size: large or small. Large Gongs produce deeper, more resonant sounds and are suitable for larger spaces and dramatic effects. Small Gongs offer higher-pitched tones and are more portable, making them ideal for smaller spaces or personal use.
- Type of Gong: Planetary Gong, Symphonic Gong, or Sound Creation Gong?
- Quality and Craftsmanship: All Gongs available at Acutonics are the highest quality and Paiste is considered the industry leader. They are hand-hammered, not machine-made.
- Accessories: Do you have the suitable mallets for your gong? How about the correct stand or mounting? Consider how you will mount or hang the gong, and ensure the stand or mounting system is sturdy and appropriate for the gong’s size and weight. Acutonics offers free consultation on all Gong orders, where each Gong is paired with recommended mallets and stands.
Taking Care Of Your Gong
A Gong is not a toy. Using a gong incorrectly can lead to several issues that affect both the instrument and the user. Below are some potential problems.
Damage to the Gong
Racking and warping can occur if striking the gong too hard. An inappropriate mallet can cause the metal to crack or warp and distort. Surface dents can occur from hitting the gong with a mallet that has a hard surface, or misalignment can occur from improper mounting or hanging, resulting in an uneven distribution of weight and warping over time.
Poor Sound Quality
Incorrect striking technique by hitting in the wrong spot or with the wrong part of the mallet can produce undesirable sounds, such as sharp, dissonant tones or muted vibrations. Incorrectly sized mallets that are too hard, too soft, or the wrong size can negatively impact the sound produced.
Physical Strain
Incorrect striking techniques such as using excessive force or improper hand positioning, can lead to repetitive strain injuries in the wrist, arm, or shoulder. Inappropriate use of the gong can disturb others that are in a meditation state.
To avoid these issues, it is important to learn proper gong-playing techniques, use appropriate equipment, and understand the cultural context in which the gong is being used.
